Some Things You Feel Before You See Them

You hear it before you round the corner.

Water over stone — that particular sound that doesn't belong to anything else. Not quite rhythm, not quite random. Just water, doing what water has always done, and something in you slows down to match it.

That's not accidental. That's ancient. Human beings have been drawn to moving water for as long as there have been human beings — not because it's beautiful, though it is, but because something in us recognizes it as safe ground. A place to exhale. A place to actually arrive somewhere after a long day of being somewhere else.

Saturday morning. Coffee still hot. You're not checking anything. You're just here — watching light move across the surface, listening to the particular music water makes over irregular stone. The koi thread between lily pads, unhurried. A dragonfly holds still in midair like it knows something. The moss on the rocks looks like it's been there longer than the house.

And for a few minutes, so do you.

The fire pit nearby has settled into that low, steady crackle — warm light catching the water's surface, two elements doing what they've always done together, one moving and one still. Someone you love is sitting close — not talking much, not needing to. The water fills the quiet. The fire holds the cold at arm's length. You're not performing a moment. You're just in one. Present. Together. The kind of together that screens have been quietly stealing for years.
